The Seattle Teacher Residency is a central strategy to improve teacher recruitment and retention in Seattle Public Schools. The goal is to provide teachers with a master’s degree in education, hands on learning in the classroom and strong mentorship to create a team of teachers that can accelerate student achievement. Seattle Teacher Residency (STR) was founded by the Alliance for Education, Seattle Public Schools, The University of Washington College of Education and the Seattle Education Association.
The Alliance for Education is a catalyst for change, a convener of community leadership, and a conduit for directing private resources – both dollars and expertise – toward critical needs in Seattle Public Schools. The Alliance is dedicated to supporting and improving public education in Seattle, operating independently of the school district.
Seattle Public Schools is the largest K-12 school system in Washington state, serving almost 50,000 students in 95 schools. We have a staff of approximately 8,000 which includes about 3,100 teachers.
